Somehow I ended up on the Canadian Harm Reduction Network mailing list at work. Most I send straight on to my co-worker who understands the issues, but this might be of interest to some in various communities.

In honour of this weekend...
My pirate name is:
Mad Jenny Flint
Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. Like the rock flint, you're hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you're easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!

the Puck factor

Roaneskin and I were watching a game of Bocce tonight in the park.As the people threw their red or green balls towards the marker in the grass I turned to Roaneskin and asked "Do you remember the Puck factor?"

Let me explain.

The Puck factor is what occurs when you play Bocce in the vicinity of Xtalforge's cat Puck. All will be going well, points are being scored, distances argued over, when suddenly a black streak will rush the ball you've just thrown and attack it. Or attack the marker ball. If he's really on his game he attacks one and sideswipes the other. Suddenly someone who's had the winning throw isn't so close to the marker anymore. In fact they're usually now the farthest away. The cat provides the random bit of chance that was previously missing from the game.

The Puck Factor. Bocce will never be quite as exciting again without it.

We're heading down to the Art Gallery in around an hour. It's the last weekend for the Brian Jungen exhibit and we promised ourselves that we wouldn't miss it. Cut it close but not miss it.

So, anyone interested in meeting us there?

My weekend has been cheerfully chaotic with visits from friends, dancing and general merrymaking. I have met new people and made new friends. I have loved every minute of it.

The highlight of the weekend was talking to my little brother during the traditional family passing of the phone at the Toronto Easter dinner. For anyone who's had the family run down from me I'm talking about the 23 year old, Chris.

His band just finished their first CD. They've signed with iTunes and Napster for internet distribution, their in talks with four different labels for distribution rights and they got a grant from Music Canada to make the video for their first single. I'm so fucking proud of him.

He's been making music seriously for seven years. His first band won a Battle of the Bands, got a contract, had a CD ready to go, then had a major falling out with their manager of the time and imploded. This time the band's doing it all themselves.

Go Chris. At least one of us figured out what they wanted to do with their life without the ten year wander in the fog.

The band's called Burning the Day and can be found at http://burningtheday.com/

because I couldn't resist...

You scored as Moya (Farscape). You are surrounded by muppets. But that is okay because they are your friends and have shown many times that they can be trusted. Now if only you could stop being bothered about wormholes.

cat rambles

cats are creatures of prime numbers

when curled tight asleep or content no pointy ends show

when sleepy and yawning one end is pointy
(although there are many points)

when starting to play or stretching three ends are pointy

when playing hard or truly pissed five ends are pointy
(this is where blood loss usually occurs for the human)

inspired by Geordi, wrapped in towels at the vets as the (very young) veterinarian looks at me earnestly and says "he was growling..."

random bits...

  • Feb. 14th, 2006 at 6:33 PM

It's been too long since I did this for real instead of memes so here are random bits from the last three weeks. In no particular order:

- got a new computer, (my first new one ever) a 80GB Mac mini
- I have blisters on both heels from the new Cons
- had last week off (I still feel three days behind where I should be)
- spent last week doing homework and sleeping (not necessarily in that order)
- cuddled with cats (lots)
- cuddled with Roaneskin (again, lots)
- saw a beautiful, full-bushy coated coyote out at around 9 pm by the house
- howled softly (wolf) and had the coyote stop and really look at me (I can't yip like a coyote)
- reminded the cats that this is why we want them in before dark
- were ignored by cats
- have been handed a major project at work "to see how I do"
- am very excited
- can't read Dreamhope's novel until I get Office for the Mac later this week
- started swimming again
- at 6:15 in the morning
- took the dog for an off-leash walk with Roaneskin on the tidal flats at Spanish Banks
- in the no dogs, on-leash or off, section (saw the sign on the way back into shore)
- breathed, laughed, loved

all in all not a bad few weeks
